Konark

The sacred city of Konark is a vital destination of the Golden Triangle circuit of Eastern India besides Bhubaneshwar and Puri. At a distance of 65 km from Bhubaneshwar, near the sacred city of Puri, is the great Sun Temple of Konark completing the small triangle of holiday destinations for tourists to Orissa.

A visual masterpiece, the solitary Sun Temple is a masterpiece surrounded by the drifting sands. The theme of worshipping the sun god is central to India. The presiding deity Konark, kona (corner) and arka (sun) lends its name to the temple. The Sun Temple has been designed in the form of a huge chariot carrying the Sun God across the heavens. The wheels of the chariot are the most awesome part of the structure and the eroticism of the sculptures can be compared with the temples of Khajuraho.
